James Boswell

James Boswell, Esq. (October 29, 1740—May 19, 1795) was a biographer and diarist born in Edinburgh, Scottland. He studied to become a lawyer, but his greatest expression of genius was the writing of his journals. He wrote in a dramatic style that portrayed the events as if they were happening to him in that moment. Boswell is best known for his biography of his friend Samuel Johnson. His unique style and inclusion of conversations that he had annotated in his journals made Life of Samuel Johnson immensely popular when it was first published.
