Funston, Edward Hogue

Funston, Edward Hogue, a Representative from Kansas; born near New Carlisle, Clark County, Ohio, September 16, 1836; attended the country schools, Lindle Hill Academy, New Carlisle, Ohio, and Marietta (Ohio) College; taught school; during the Civil War entered the Union Army in 1861 as lieutenant, Sixteenth Ohio Battery; participated in the principal engagements along the Mississippi River; mustered out in 1865; located on a prairie farm near Carlyle, Allan County, Kans., in 1867; member of the State house of representatives 1873-1876, and served as speaker in 1875; member of the State senate 1880-1884, and served as president pro tempore in 1880; elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Dudley C. Haskell; reelected to the Forty-ninth and to the three succeeding Congresses and served from March 21, 1884, to March 3, 1893; presented credentials as a Member-elect to the Fifty-third Congress and served from March 4, 1893, until August 2, 1894, when he was succeeded by Horace L. Moore, who contested the election; resumed agricultural pursuits; died in Iola, Kans., on September 10, 1911; interment in Iola Cemetery.
