Greene, Albert Collins

Greene, Albert Collins, a Senator from Rhode Island; born in East Greenwich, R.I., April 15, 1791; was graduated from Kent Academy in his native town; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1812 and commenced practice in East Greenwich, R.I.; member of the State house of representatives 1815-1825 and served as speaker from October 1821 to May 1822, and from October 1822 to May 1825; brigadier general of the Fourth Brigade of State Militia 1816-1821; major general 1821-1823; attorney general of Rhode Island 1825-1843; member of the State senate in 1843 and 1844; elected as a Whig to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1845, to March 3, 1851; was not a candidate for reelection; again elected to the State senate in 1851 and 1852; again a member of the State house of representatives in 1857; retired from public life; died in Providence, R.I., January 8, 1863; interment in Grace Church Cemetery.
