Biographical SummaryEdward Morgan (E. M.) Forster (January 1, 1879–June 7, 1970) was a British writer, literary critic, and essayist. He had deep empathy toward the lower class and wrote his novels examining class divisions and hypocrisy in British society. His first novel, Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905), was an instant success. Later works include The Longest Journey (1907), A Room with a View (1908), and Howard's End (1910). He wrote numerous short stories, plays, and essays, and several of his novels have been made into films.
