Jayne, William
Jayne, William, a Delegate from the Territory of Dakota; born in Springfield, Ill., October 8, 1826; completed preparatory studies at Illinois College, Jacksonville, Ill., and was graduated from the medical department of the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1849; commenced the practice of medicine in Springfield; mayor of Springfield 1859-1861; member of the State senate in 1860 but resigned in 1861 to accept the appointment of Governor of Dakota Territory from President Lincoln; served as Governor 1861-1863; presented credentials as a Delegate-elect to the Thirty-eighth Congress and served from March 4, 1863, to June 17, 1864, when he was succeeded by John B. S. Todd, who contested his election; returned to Springfield and continued the practice of medicine; served three terms as mayor of Springfield during the period 1865 to 1880; appointed by President Grant pension agent atSpringfield and served from 1869 to 1873; resumed the practice of medicine; died in Springfield, Ill., on March 20, 1916; interment in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
