Curtis, Charles

Curtis, Charles (b. North Topeka, Kans., 25 January 1860; d. Washington, D.C., 8 February 1936) Of mixed British- Osage ancestry, Curtis was the only person registered as an Indian tribal member to become vice-president. He began practicing law in 1881, sat in Congress as a Republican from Kans. (1893–1907), was senator (1907–29, except 1913), and was Senate majority leader (1924–9). He was Herbert Hoover’s running mate.
