Grimes, Thomas Wingfield
Grimes, Thomas Wingfield, a Representative from Georgia; born in Columbus, Muscogee County, Ga., December 18, 1844; attended private schools, and was graduated from the University of Georgia at Athens in 1863; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Columbus, Ga.; served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War for eighteen months with Nelson’s rangers, Gen. S. D. Lee’s escort company; member of the State house of representatives in 1868, 1869, 1875, and 1876; member of the State senate in 1878 and 1879; delegate to the Democratic National Convention at Cincinnati in 1880; solicitor general of the Chattahoochee circuit from 1880 to 1888, when he resigned; elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses (March 4, 1887-March 3, 1891); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1890 to the Fifty-second Congress; resumed the practice of law in Columbus, Ga., and died there on October 28, 1905; interment in Linwood Cemetery.
