Bates, Joseph Bengal

Bates, Joseph Bengal, a Representative from Kentucky; born in Republican, Ky., October 29, 1893; attended the public schools and the Mountain Training School at Hindman, Ky.; was graduated from Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College at Richmond in 1916; studied law; taught in the rural schools of Knott County, Ky., 1912-1915; high school superintendent at Raceland, Ky., 1917-1919; county clerk of Greenup County, Ky., 1922-1938; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Fred M. Vinson; reelected to the Seventy-sixth and to the four succeeding Congresses and served from June 4, 1938, to January 3, 1949. Reelected to the Eighty-first Congress.

BATES, Martin Waltham, a Senator from Delaware; born in Salisbury, Conn., February 24, 1787; attended the common schools; moved to Delaware and taught school for several years; studied medicine, and later studied law; was admitted to the bar October 5, 1822, and commenced practice in Dover, Kent County, Del.; member of the State house of representatives in 1826; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1852; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John M. Clayton and served from January 14, 1857, to March 3, 1859; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1858; resumed the practice of law until his death in Dover, Del., January 1, 1869; interment in the Old Methodist Cemetery.
