First Party System
First Party System This term refers to the emergence of the Democratic and Federalist parties in the 1790s and their ensuing competition. This period ended in 1820, when the Federalists failed to nominate a candidate. After a period when the US had just one major political party, a second party system evolved in the 1830s.
