Hale, Artemas
Hale, Artemas, a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Winchendon, Worcester County, Mass., October 20, 1783; received a limited education and worked on a farm; taught school in Hingham, Mass., 1804-1814; became interested in the manufacture of cotton gins in Bridgewater; member of the State house of representatives 1824, 1825, 1827, and 1828; served in the State senate 1833 and 1834; again a member of the State house of representatives 1838-1842; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1853; elected as a Whig to the Twenty ninth and Thirtieth Congresses (March 4, 1845-March 3, 1849); engaged in agricultural pursuits; presidential elector on the Republican ticket of Lincoln and Johnson in 1864; died in Bridgewater, Mass., August 3, 1882; interment in Mount Prospect Cemetery.
