Treasury, Department of the
Treasury, Department of the Congressional committees supervised national finances during the Revolution. On 30 July 1779, Congress organized the Board of Treasury, which it replaced with a Department of Finance on 7 February 1781 and a Board of Treasury on 28 May 1784. On 2 September 1789, Congress created the Department of the Treasury and named Alexander Hamilton its first secretary on 11 September. Its principal agencies are the Internal Revenue Service, Customs Service, Secret Service, US Mint, and Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
