Rack-Renting

Rack-Renting This was the practice of raising the price of leases on tenancies to their maximum level when they came due for periodic renewal. Tenants who could not afford the new rate were thrown off the land. Ruthless use of Rack-Renting in Ulster after 1730 stimulated a large Scotch-Irish immigration to the thirteen colonies.
